Power Industry

We are a key contractor to the power industry. We supply a vast range of services to Aurora, Transend and the Hydro.

All staff are trained in the Power System Safety Rules as Instructed Persons, Persons in Charge, or Issuing Officer.

General Aurora Works

Hard Rock Holes

Our excavators are fitted with rock breakers and accessories that are capable of breaking out neat holes in solid rock to depths over 5 meters. In very durable rock we can safely blast precise holes in close proximity to dwellings and existing services.

Erect Poles

Erect / Remove Poles

Aurora have certified our machines to erect and remove both wooden and steel poles.
We can stand up to 24 meter solid hardwood poles with gear attached, and our lifting jibs and cranes can be used to assist installing apparatus on poles once they have been erected.

Install Ground Stays

We are authorised to install ground stays for stay wires coming off poles. We have screw in stay attachments with pressure guages to correctly screw in helix stays. In very soft, or very hard ground we can dig in concrete anchor blocks and in areas of solid rock we can drill into the rock and fasten rock bolts.

Cattle Guards

Cattle / Stock Guards

When ground stays are installed in a paddock, bushland or close to public access, we can erect a cattle / stock guard. These strong timber guards are built around the stay wire to stop farm stock from rubbing on the wires, which causes dangerous movement and possible breaking of the wire.

This guard also makes the stay wire more visible and protects it from machinery and vehicles coming in contact with the wire.

Concrete Cutting around poles

All installed poles need periodic testing to check the poles integrity and stability. Where the poles are set in concrete or asphalt footpaths and driveways, we neatly cut and break out the concrete around the pole and back fill the hole with crusher dust. This allows easy access to the base of the pole for the power line inspectors.

Transmission Line Works

Transmission Line Upgrades

During the past three years, we have been involved in the upgrade of the Transend Transmission Line which runs from Norwood to Derby in the states north east. The project involved redeveloping the three substations that serve the area—Norwood, Scottsdale and Derby—and building a new 110,000 volt (110 kV) transmission line between the substations to replace the existing 88 kV line. This new line consisted of 300 new steel towers, all of which needed access, excavation, foundation, delivery and construction.

In the past 12 months we have also been working with Transfield and Aurora on the Burnie/Port Latta/Smithton transmission line upgrade.

Digga Excavations have been an integral part of the construction process and some of our services for these projects are listed below.
Pole Truck Deviation Lines
Where the new line was to be built within the limits of the existing line, 5 temporary lines were constructed to allow the removal of existing wires and towers and allow new towers to be built.
For this job we met with land owners prior to accessing land and carried out tasks in relation to owners preferences. We managed the pole ordering and onsite deliveries and dug, erected and later removed 95 poles (15m and 18m poles), and installed 35 back stays and cattle guards.
Boring Foundations Boring Foundations
For this project we set up the boring excavator which completed 72 bored 1200mm - 1800mm diameter foundations at 5.8 - 7.2 meters deep and placed foundation reinforcing formwork and poured concrete.
The excavator also had a 35ton rock breaker onsite to break out problem rocks, which could then be augered out or cleaned out with the core barrels.
Hurdles Hurdle Structure construction / erection / removal
We constructed and erected approximately 180 wooden pole hurdle structures to keep new wires off the roads, sensitive areas and existing live high voltage power lines until wires had been tensioned. The structures ranged from 10 to 15 meters high.
We organised onsite pole deliveries, full traffic control during works and conducted regular internal safety audits. We also dismantled hurdles and organised pole removal and site rehabilitation.
In some areas that hurdles could not be constructed we completed the erection and removal of onsite scaffolding.
Foundation Tower Foundations
We carried out all onsite excavations for rock anchors and bulk anchors. This involved marking out and excavating foundation areas for new towers that were in rock.
This was completed using excavators with rock breakers, rippers and buckets.
We then returned once the foundation had been poured for site rehabilitation.
Concrete Stub Second Stage Concreting
The bases of the new towers were constructed on concrete stubs. We worked exclusively with Aurora Energy to design forms for second stage concrete.
We completed the second stage concrete foundations which included land owner liaisons, setting up the formwork, ordering and pouring concrete, removing the formwork and site clean up. This project was performed throughout winter, and completed ahead of schedule.
Tower Delivery Tower Component Delivery
The new towers and accessories were constructed and shipped over from China in large shipping containers.
Our JCB Loadall was fitted with various lifting jibs to carefully and safely unpack these large pole components (ranging from 20kg - 8 ton).
We unloaded the shipping containers in the Aurora yards at Nunamara and Ringwood where the approximate 2100 tower components were sorted and delivered onsite.
Roading Road design and Construction
Access roading into tower sites were designed and constructed to allow all weather access to tower locations. We carted gravel from local quarrys and used our Marooka to cart product into many very wet areas which proved to be the perfect machine for the job.
Dry Hire Dry hire of equipment
Dry hire of equipment including our 15ton rubber tracked Marooka to provide all weather access to wet and muddy areas and our JCB Loadall telehandler for use in the Transfield yard, and onsite if required.
